9 people arrested in Bhangar violence during ISF rally

A day after widespread violence broke out in parts of Kolkata and its outskirts over the Waqf Amendment Act, the city remains under a watchful eye. On Monday, a rally called by the Indian Secular Front (ISF) demanding the withdrawal of the Waqf Amendment Act turned violent, leading to chaos, destruction, and multiple injuries. Kolkata Police have arrested nine people in connection with the incident.

The protests began peacefully at Ramlila Maidan in Sealdah, organized by ISF under the leadership of party MLA Nawsad Siddiqui. However, tensions flared when a large crowd attempted to join the gathering via Basanti Highway. Police had set up barricades to prevent unpermitted entry, which led to clashes when the protestors tried to push through.

The situation spiraled out of control in Sonepur, Bhangar. According to reports, a frenzied crowd holding national flags began vandalizing property. CCTV cameras were destroyed, police vans were overturned, and at least five bikes were set on fire. A prison van was also damaged. Five police personnel were injured in the attack.

Police resorted to a lathi charge to control the crowd after one ISF worker reportedly sustained a serious head injury. Despite the escalation, the police claim they acted with restraint. In a swift overnight operation, three persons were arrested initially, and six more were picked up later, all charged with rioting, attacking police, vandalism of government property, and unlawful assembly.

On Tuesday, a tense calm hung over the affected areas. Burnt vehicles lay scattered as municipal workers began the clean-up process. The administration deployed heavy police forces to maintain order and conduct surveillance. Though there were no fresh incidents of violence, local residents reported a sense of unease.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and senior ministers have repeatedly urged the public to maintain peace and warned of strict action against those involved in violence. “No one will be spared. Law will take its course,” she said in an appeal for calm. The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected.
